Dragon Ball: The Manga That Changed Anime Forever
When Akira Toriyama began serializing Dragon Ball in Weekly Shonen Jump in December 1984, he was already a respected manga artist - Dr. Slump had been a major hit. But Dragon Ball would become something different: a work that redefined the conventions of the entire shonen action genre and produced characters who are now recognized worldwide by people who have never read a single chapter of manga.
The story and its structure
Dragon Ball began as a loose adaptation of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, following a young boy named Son Goku - monkey-tailed, extraordinarily strong, and entirely naive about the world - as he searches for the seven Dragon Balls that can grant any wish. The early series was predominantly comedic, a road trip adventure with occasional fights.
The later portion of the series - and its sequel Dragon Ball Z, which covers the Saiyan, Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu arcs - shifted dramatically toward sustained action. It was here that the series established the template for the power-escalation battle manga that would define shonen action for the next three decades: increasingly powerful enemies, transformations that reveal new power levels, fights that test the hero's limits and force growth. Naruto, One Piece, Bleach - all acknowledge Dragon Ball as a foundational influence.
Toriyama's visual legacy
Beyond the narrative, Toriyama's character design work for Dragon Ball has had an unusual second life. His style - clean, energetic, with an instinct for memorable silhouettes - has been cited as an influence by game designers (he did the character designs for Dragon Quest), animators, and illustrators across multiple industries. The Dragon Ball characters are recognizable in outline alone, which is the mark of exceptional character design.
