Today, we sat down with Julien Martin, an experienced endurance runner who made the switch to 5-toe socks several years ago. From comfort to performance and injury prevention, he explains why he’ll never go back to traditional socks.

1. Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your running background?

Julien Martin: I’ve been running for about 12 years, mainly focusing on road running and trail running. I usually run 4 to 5 times per week, anywhere from 8 km easy runs to long runs of 25–30 km. Running has always been about feeling free and connected to my body.

2. When did you start running with 5-toe socks, and why?

Julien Martin: I switched to 5-toe socks around 5 years ago. At first, it was pure curiosity! I kept hearing about better toe alignment and fewer blisters. After my first few runs, I immediately felt a difference, especially in how my feet moved naturally inside the shoe.

3. What are the main advantages of running with 5-toe socks?

Julien Martin: The biggest advantage is toe separation. Each toe can move independently, which improves balance and stability. I also noticed far fewer blisters, because there’s no skin-on-skin friction between toes. Overall, my feet feel more relaxed and natural during runs.

4. Have you noticed any impact on performance or running form?

Julien Martin: Yes, definitely. With 5-toe socks, I feel more grounded. My foot strike feels more precise, especially on uneven surfaces or trails. They don’t magically make you faster, but they clearly improve foot awareness and efficiency, which really matters over long distances.

5. What about comfort on long runs?

Julien Martin: That’s where they really stand out. On long runs, my feet stay cooler and drier, and I don’t get that compressed feeling around the toes. Even after 20 km or more, my feet feel fresher compared to when I wore classic socks.

6. Some runners think 5-toe socks are strange or uncomfortable. What would you say to them?

Julien Martin: I thought the same at first! The first run feels a bit unusual, but your feet adapt very quickly. I always recommend starting with short runs and keeping an open mind. Once you get used to them, regular socks feel surprisingly restrictive.

7. Would you recommend 5-toe socks to all runners?

Julien Martin: I’d especially recommend them to runners who struggle with blisters, overlapping toes, or foot instability. They’re also excellent for trail running. Like any gear, it’s personal, but for me, they’ve been a real game changer...

8. What’s your best advice for runners curious about trying 5-toe socks?

Julien Martin: Listen to your body. Running is about small details, and sometimes a simple change can make a big difference. Try them gradually, stay patient, and let your feet do what they’re designed to do.
